Katherine Longbottom bolted through the hall on her way to her common room, tears streaming down her eyes. She hadn't meant to cry, but she couldn't help it. She had seen Teddy and Lucille together again, and the nagging jealousy had driven her to tears. How did this always happen to her? The tears were so thick, she could no longer see. There was no way she'd make it to her common room.
Kat dragged her hand across her face to wipe some of the tears and spotted an empty classroom. She darted in and slammed the door shut, hoping no one had seen her enter. The tears streamed from her eyes, splashing on her robes, the floors, the desk she had launched herself onto. Sobs shook her body as she gasped for air. It was almost like drowning in tears.

Jeremy Malfoy sat in an abandoned classroom. He was reading. Reading wasn't something a Malfoy was often caught doing in public, so he had taken a habit to sneaking away to a quiet place to partake of his favorite novel. Usually this time he took out of his busy day of tormenting first years was quiet and productive. Today however he was interrupted rudely by a sobbing red head bursting into his sanctuary. He didn't say a word however, shocked by the sudden outburst she had made into the room. He noticed who she was after a moment. Katherine Longbottom, the girl he had been secretly peeking glances at across the Great Hall during meals. He frowned, wondering what had caused her to cry so hard, or who. He mentally promised himself he would lead whoever did this into a dark abandoned corridor sometime soon. He shifted absentmindedly, accidentally causing his ink bottle to topple over with a hollow clang onto the stone floor, spilling all over his book. He cursed under his breath and tried frantically to wipe the ink off the pages, forgetting about trying to stay invisible to the crying girl.

Katherine jumped about a foot into the air as she heard an ink bottle crash in the room. Looking around wildly, she spotted none other than Jeremy Malfoy. Embarrassed, and a little annoyed, she turned away from him and began stumbling to the door. Malfoy was the last person she wanted to be with, and she certainly didn't want him to see her crying. Jeremy Malfoy had never treated any of the Weasleys or Longbottoms with any respect. He was the prime example of every other Malfoy there had ever been, a downright slime ball, and Katherine wanted nothing to do with him.
As she stumbled toward the door, she tripped on seemingly nothing, and fell to the ground hard, cursing under her breath. She'd never hear the end of this one from the Slytherins. She began to sob harder, hugging her legs toward herself in confusion. She didn't know whether to give up or get away. All she knew was that at this moment, she wanted nothing else but for Jeremy to disappear.

Jeremy stumbled to pick up his things as Katherine tried to leave the room. He cursed himself mentally for scaring her. She tripped and fell to the ground hard, sobbing still and curling up into herself and crying even harder. Jeremy didn't know what to do, he stood there as ink seeped through his pants to stain his leg. He debated for a moment, she probably didn't want him there, yet somehow he couldn't bring himself to leave her like this. He crossed the room and sat down next to her, keeping his distance in case she lashed out. He leaned his head back against the wall. "Who made you cry?" He asked, not raising his voice very high, trying to keep it even and friendly. "I can teach them a lesson if you'd like."

Katherine jumped, a little shocked at the kindness Jeremy was showing her. Was it a trick? Would he entertain the Slytherin table with a replay of their conversation at dinner? That wasn't a risk she particularly wanted to take. She thought for a long moment, trying to figure out what to say. Finally, she settled for, "What's it to you?"
Sniffling, she tried to mop up the small ocean that had formed on her face, mentally cursing herself for not wearing her water-proof mascara as her sleeve came back with streaks of black.

Jeremy looked at her. Her face was streaked with tears and mascara, her eyes puffy and red as she looked at him questioningly. He knew she was contemplating whether he was pranking her or not. He sighed and ran his fingers through his messy blond hair. "Please allow me to be considerate. I know you don't think very highly of me, but I'm not a complete git, as you'd like to believe. I'd like to help if you'll let me." He smirked at his own pathetic-ness. "The only way I can think to help would be to beat up whoever made you cry, I'm not too good at anything else."

Katherine sniffled, a little confused, and finally, her tears began to slow down. All these years, she had known Jeremy Malfoy to be your typical not a very nice person Malfoy, and now, here he was being kind. It made Katherine feel a little frightened, and she voice shook with fear and emotion as she replied, "It would probably be wrong to have you beat up my cousin, I expect. Not to mention a close family friend. d**n. I don't know why it upset me so much." Katherine set her chin on her knees and scooted around so she could look Jeremy Malfoy in the eye and lean up against a desk. As she stared at the blond boy, she sniffled again, wiping more of the tears and mascara from her face.

Jeremy's heart beat faster as he realized Katherine was possibly starting to warm up to him. He couldn't remember the countless times he'd planned ways of achieving this during classes when he should have been paying attention. And yet, here it was happening without a trace of a plan. "Your cousin? What'd they do, kill your puppy?" he asked, then mentally kicking himself for the remark. Quickly he tried to correct it. "I mean, sorry...I told you I wasn't good at this, why did this cousin of ours make you cry?" He adjusted his collar absentmindedly, focusing on somewhere other then her eyes, they made him nervous.

Katherine dried the remaineder of tears off her cheek and sniffled hopefully for the last time. She couldn't believe she was sitting here telling all her problems to Jeremy Malfoy. "Well," she said hesitantly, "I was going out with Teddy Lupin, but he dumped me rather suddenly. Then, not even two weeks later, her started dating my cousin, and I'm still not over him yet. Usually, I'm okay, but sometimes, when I see them together, this happens." Katherine gestured to her smeared mascara and began nibbling at her pinky as she often did when she was nervous. "You're not just going to go back and blab to the other Slytherins how pathetic I am, right?" She asked suddenly, just to make sure.

Jeremy frowned as she was telling him about her recent boyfriend. "Of course I'm not going to tell them." he reassured her. "Why in the world would I do that? You really think I'm horrible don't you...well, I suppose you have good reason." He scratched his head and glanced at her, noticing her tears were drying up now. "Are you sure I can't beat him up? I've wanted to for awhile now, the stupid git doesn't know when he has something good."

Katherine looked at Jeremy a little shocked. Had he just hinted that he liked her? That was weird, and a little creepy. At least he wasn't going to blab on her. "It's really up to you, I suppose," Katherine replied. Secretly, she hoped Jeremy would beat some sence into Teddy, but there was that part of her that still really liked Teddy that didn't want Jeremy anywhere near him. "If you've really got your heart set on beating him up, I can't exactly stop you, but I'd rather you not. And if you do, you can't tell him I have anything to do with it. I would be in so much trouble with mum and dad, and not just for letting you beat up Teddy."

Jeremy smirked. "Well, I could always just hex something on him...Like maybe a three day wedgie or something silly like that. No visible evidence. The kid needs some sense beat into him though." He sighed. "But I don't want to get you in trouble, then I'd really feel horrible, even if giving that Lupin kid a nice black eye to bring home would really be enjoyable." He shifted, stretching his legs out and leaning back against the wall. "I'll keep myself under control though, if you really don't want me beating him. Say, don't you have a class this time of day?" he asked, trying to avert the subject before he really let something embarrassing out.

Katherine felt herself smiling a little, which shocked her. She would never had expected to be smiling in the presence of Jeremy Malfoy, yet her he was making her grin like a complete idiot. "Nah," she said. "I'm only my break for another twenty minutes. Then it's off to Defense Against the Dark Arts." Katherine gave a weak smile. She didn't dislike DADA, but it definately wasn't her favorite class. She had a fond love of potions, which confused the rest of her family, all of whom were determined to loath potions with every particle of their being. "What about you? I suppose I could see you skipping class, but something tells me while the you you are in public would, you really wouldn't." She made it sound like a question more than a statement, hoping he would clarify for her.

Jeremy smiled. "As much as you'd like to believe that, I really enjoy going to class. Defense Against the Dark Arts isn't my best class though, surprisingly, I'm actually pretty good at Transfiguration." He sighed. "I'm actually quite a bookworm." He smirked up at her playfully. "But you're not going to go blabbing that to your little Ravenclaw friends now are you?"

Katherine smiled shyly. "Of course not. If I so much breath a word of talking to you, I'll practically get disowned." She let out what oddly resembled a giggle before covering her mouth and saying seriously, "I really like potions. The first time I wrote home and told my parents how cool potions was, they practically had an anurism." She sighed loudly, scuffing her foot around on the ground, tracing the outline of the Ravenclaw emblem. "I'm everything they don't want me to be."
